MANILA - HGST, subsidiary of Western Digital, one of the world's largest hard drive makers, shifted one of its operations from China to the Philippines as it expands manufacturing and research and development in the Southeast Asian country.

HGST Philippines Chandramogan Anamirtham, who said he can't disclose the unit, also said the company plans to increase its local workforce from 9,000 to 10,000.
He was speaking at an event of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Inc. in Makati.

That means 25 percent of its total workforce will be based in Laguna.

HGST, the former Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, says the Philippines accounts for 80 percent of its development and prototype activities, which were used to be done in Japan and the U.S.

Western Digital bought HGST in 2012.

HGST says the Philippines should still address power supply issues and streamline its technology curriculum to meet the company's requirements. -
