SUAL, Pangasinan -- The oil spill from a busted pipe of the Sual-coal fired power plant was already under control as of noon Monday, said Mayor Robert Arcinue.
Arcinue rushed to the power plant in Barangay Pangascasan when he and other town officials noticed the oil spill came from a busted pipe where bunker fuel passes through.
Operated by Team Energy, the Sual Coal-fired Power Plant produces 1,200 megawatt for the Luzon Grid.
He said he talked to the management of the plant who agreed to be responsible for cleaning the oil spill that had affected the Cabalitian Bay in Sual.
So far, he expressed satisfaction on the cleaning being done by the company in Cabalitian Bay but said he needs to have further dialogue with officials of the plant to prevent an environmental disaster.
Cabalitian Bay is the location of hundreds of fish cages used in intensive culture of milkfish. But the way Arcinue sounded, the oil spill did not affect the milkfish being raised in the fish cages.
This is the first time that such an oil spill caused by the power plant happened.
Arcinue and other town officials joined in inspecting the busted pipe until 4 p.m. Monday and found it was spilling bunker fuel to the sea.
Sual is one of the biggest producers of milkfish in Pangasinan. Its milkfish products are shipped to Manila daily.
The oil spill is expected not to reach other milkfish producing areas of Binmaley and Dagupan as well as Alaminos, Anda, and Bolinao. - © Provided by InterAksyon
