In spite of the late former President Ferdinand Marcos’
record of corruption and human right abuses, Senator
Francis Escudero believes still
believes that Marcos still has the right to be given
a hero’s burial. According to Escudero, the
country has to move on from the past.
Marcos deserves a heroe’s burial.
“Whatever anyone’s
complaint is, whatever the accusation against him is, it cannot be denied that
he was a former head of state and soldier. And if only because of that, he
should be given the appropriate burial,” he said.
The late former Sorsorgon Rep. Salvador Escudero III who
is Escudero’s father, filed a resolution in 2011 urging President Aquino to
allow Marcos’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
There are about 200 lawmakers signed the resolution, but
for President Aquino, giving Marcos a hero’s burial is out of the question.
Aquno’s family is the rival of the Marcoses.
A proposal for a
hero’s burial for the late dictator has always been met with opposition,
especially from those who suffered under martial law.
But Escudero said, “There may have been martial law and
human rights violations, but it’s still undeniable that he became president.”
He also said that the issue about Marco’s burial is country’s problem that
should be resolved.
He hopes President Aquino, would finally allow a hero’s
burial for Marcos and help the country to move on.
“Maybe it would happen at the right time so that we can
close this remaining unresolved issue,” he said.
