AFP sends additional troops to Mindanao

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is sending additional soldiers to increase the level of the military's presence in Mindanao amids Abu Sayyaf hostage crisis.

As part of the government's obligation to address the threat posed by terrorists in Mindanao most particularly the ASG, the 5th Infantry Division deployed and repositions one brigade with two battalions to boost its forces there.


Major General Benito Antonio De Leon, who is the commander of the 5th Infantry Division, recognized the efforts and contributions of 501st Brigade and 41st IB in the pursuing of peace, progress and prosperity in Northern Luzon.

"Today is the best time to be a soldier. In the fulfillment of duty, one is called to serve. Service to the nation becomes every soldier's creed as he enters the military institution. It encompasses the various roles and challenges you will yet to face," said De Leon.

"Bilang sundalo, kaakibat ng ating pagsisilbi sa bayan ang mawalay sa ating pamilya. Tayo ay sumumpa na uunahin ang bayan bago ang ating sarili. Ito ay ating paninindigan hanggang sa tayo ay magretiro," he added.

Despite the limited forces, De Leon also assured the participants in Ifugao, Cagayan and Abra, the 5th Infantry Division shall continue to support the programs and activities that aimed to achieve peace, progress and prosperity in its area of operation.
